Kasarani: A New Era for Kenya’s Sporting Cathedral
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, often hailed as Kenya’s “Sporting Cathedral,” has a rich history. Built in 1987 under the patronage of Kenya’s second President, Daniel Arap Moi, it proudly hosted the All-Africa Games. Since then, it has been the stage for numerous national, continental, and even global events, including the World Athletics U18 and U20 Athletics Championships.

Despite its prestigious past and the significant resources invested in its upkeep over the years, many of these renovations have been criticized as merely “cosmetic,” failing to deliver substantial improvements.

However, a new chapter is unfolding for Kasarani. The stadium is currently undergoing a significant transformation in preparation for the upcoming CHAN tournament, which it will co-host with other East African facilities. Most notably, Kasarani has been chosen to host the tournament’s final – a testament to its renewed status.

It’s clear that under the leadership of current President Dr. William Ruto, Kasarani is receiving its first truly major renovation and upgrade. Regardless of one’s political views, it’s undeniable that this administration has demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to sports infrastructure compared to the previous two.

As fans, we now have a collective responsibility to protect and preserve this revitalized facility. Acts of hooliganism and vandalism are incredibly costly to rectify, ultimately burdening the taxpayer. Let’s ensure Kasarani remains a source of national pride for years to come.
